Chapter Sixteen

Chloe’s stunned expression quickly morphed into a huge smile. “Oh my gosh! What is this?”

“It’s a Chloe celebration,” Rina replied as she, Philippa and Zurie swarmed her with hugs.

Chloe glanced at Tristan. Lately, they seemed so much in sync, they even dressed almost alike. Her olive T-shirt and ripped jeans paired well with his khaki button-down and jeans.

“Now it makes sense.” She pointed at him. “You didn’t forget to bring the salad I made. You left it behind on purpose, didn’t you?”

He smiled. “You can apologize for fussing at me about it later.” He kissed her cheek then glanced at Scott. “We should head out. Mace is meeting us.”

Hearing Mace’s name snagged Zurie’s attention. He’s working tonight, isn’t he? She pulled up short from calculating how many hours of sleep he may have gotten. Worrying about him. She couldn’t get in the habit of doing that.

Tristan and Chloe shared a brief kiss while Scott and Rina shared a double lip smack and I love yous.

Scott gave a general wave as he and Tristan filed out of the living room. “Have fun, ladies.”

Rina grabbed a blue gift bag with white tissue paper inside it from the couch. She held it out to Chloe. “We got you a little something to put you in the mood.”

Chloe laughed. “I’m already there.” She set her purse on the side chair and perched on the end of the seat. Digging through the tissue paper, she pulled out a gold “Bride 2 Be” headband and veil, a white T-shirt printed with the same wording, and dark leggings. “How cute. I’ll go put them on.” She hurried to the bathroom.

Philippa sat in a side chair. “So Scott and Tristan are hanging out with each other now?”

“Occasionally.” Rina poured lemonade into cups. “Scott helped Tristan with a plumbing issue at his house, so they got a chance to know each other a little better, and we’ve had a couple of Friday date nights with them.”

Zurie accepted a full cup from Rina. Date nights. If she and Mace were really a couple, they’d be part of the group. She hid disappointment behind a long sip of lemonade.

“I wonder how Tristan getting married will affect his friendship with Mace,” Philippa said.

“I don’t know.” Rina set the pitcher back on the counter. “Maybe he’ll start coming on date nights with us and bring whomever he’s dating now.”

“Now that’s a mystery.” Philippa chuckled. “Unless you believe the crazy rumor about him and Zurie.”

Panic leaped in Zurie, and she coughed down the next sip of her drink. “What rumor?”

Philippa flicked her hand as if waving off an annoying bug. “Just silly gossip someone tried to float around the kitchen.” She laughed. “You and Mace. Don’t worry, no one believed it.”

But why not her and Mace? Was it that far-fetched? The objection hovered on the tip of Zurie’s tongue. Why were people so into who was dating who, anyway?

The answer was so obvious, she didn’t bother saying it aloud. Bolan was growing as
